A piece of trim falls off your ordinary (non-commercial) car while you're driving on a highway — you didn't notice anything wrong beforehand. Under HTA Section 84.2, are you guilty of an offence just for that happening?

Correct answer: B. Yes — the driver is guilty of an offence simply because a part detached, regardless of intent, and faces a $100-$2,000 fine for an ordinary vehicle

Section 84.2(1) makes the driver guilty of an offence whenever any part of a vehicle, or anything affixed to it, becomes detached while the vehicle is on a highway — it doesn't require the driver to have known or intended it. For an ordinary vehicle, subsection (3) sets the fine at not less than $100 and not more than $2,000; a commercial motor vehicle faces a much steeper $400 to $20,000 range instead.
