G1 process

Getting your G1 licence

What do I need to bring to write the G1 knowledge test?

Bring original, valid identification that shows your legal name and date of birth. One document may cover both, or you may need more than one. Check the exact DriveTest list of acceptable documents before you go. You must also pass a vision test, so bring the glasses or contact lenses you use for driving.

How do I book the G1 test?

Knowledge tests are available without an appointment on a first-come, first-served basis. DriveTest recommends arriving at least one hour before the centre closes. Check the current knowledge-test instructions and your centre's hours before travelling. Use the DrivingDecoded centre finder to compare nearby locations.

How much does the G1 test cost?

DriveTest lists the Class G1 licence package at CAD 159.75. It includes the knowledge test, a Class G2 road test, and a five-year licence; the package fee is paid when you apply. An additional knowledge-test attempt is CAD 16. Verify the amounts on the official DriveTest fees page before you visit because fees can change.

How old do I need to be to get a G1?

You must be at least 16 years old and an Ontario resident. You also need to pass a vision test and the knowledge test. DriveTest summarizes these requirements on its car-licence page.

How is the G1 test structured, and how many can I get wrong?

DriveTest describes the knowledge test as multiple choice, untimed, and requiring at least 80% to pass. Its official page does not state that the test always has 40 questions or that you must score 16 out of 20 in each section, so we do not present those common figures as verified facts. Check the current DriveTest knowledge-test page before your test.

Is there a vision test too?

Yes. A short eye test happens at the same visit as your written test, before a G1 is issued.

How long is a G1 valid, and when can I book my next road test?

Ontario's graduated-licensing process normally takes about 20 to 24 months, and you have up to five years to finish it. You can take the G1 exit road test after 12 months, or after 8 months if you complete an approved driver-education course. Expiry and requalification rules depend on the stage you reach, so confirm your situation with DriveTest using its graduated-licensing guidance.

What happens if I don't pass the knowledge test?

You can try again. DriveTest lists each additional knowledge-test attempt at CAD 16. If you retry within one year, you need to rewrite only the sections you did not pass. Confirm the current rules on the official knowledge-test page.
