What the G1 knowledge test covers
The G1 is a written, multiple-choice knowledge test covering the rules of the road and road signs. It's the first step in Ontario's graduated licensing system, and it checks whether you understand how to drive safely and legally — not just whether you can recognize a pattern from a practice sheet.

Your road to a full G licence
Seven steps, across three licence levels.
- Level One · G1
Step 1 of 7
Turn 16
You must be at least 16 to apply for a G1.
Step 2 of 7
Pass two tests
A vision test and a knowledge test on the rules of the road and traffic signs, both before a G1 is issued.
Step 3 of 7
Drive as a G1
Zero blood alcohol. No driving between midnight and 5 a.m. An accompanying driver with a full G and four or more years of experience, in the front seat.
Step 4 of 7
Practise 12 months
Or 8 months with an approved driver-education course.

Step 5 of 7
Pass the G2 road test
Cancel with less than 48 hours' notice and the fee is forfeited. After a fail, wait at least 10 days before testing again.
Step 6 of 7
Drive as a G2
Drivers 19 and under face passenger limits between midnight and 5 a.m.

Step 7 of 7
Pass the full G road test
Finish the whole process within five years, or start over.
