Clearer driving. A safer Ontario.

What to bring for your Ontario G1 test

Bring original identification, be ready for a vision test, and check DriveTest current document and centre guidance before you leave.

01

Bring original identification

DriveTest requires original identification that proves your legal name and date of birth when you apply for an Ontario driver licence. The exact documents that work depend on your status in Canada, so use the official acceptable-ID list instead of relying on a photo or an unofficial checklist.

Ontario new-driver guidance also says applicants need to declare that Ontario is their primary place of residence and that their presence in Canada is legal. Bring documents that support your own application and ask DriveTest if anything is unclear before travelling.

02

Plan for the vision test and payment

A vision test is part of applying for a G1. Bring the glasses or contact lenses you normally use for driving so the result reflects how you will drive.

The Class G1 licence package fee is paid when you apply. DriveTest publishes the current fee and accepted payment methods, so check that page before your visit because fees and payment rules can change.

03

Confirm your centre before you go

Knowledge tests are available at DriveTest centres without an appointment. DriveTest recommends arriving at least one hour before closing so there is enough time to register and complete the test.

This checklist is for the written G1 knowledge-test visit. A later road-test appointment has different requirements, including a suitable vehicle.
