Ontario G1 test day: what happens at DriveTest
At DriveTest, new applicants register, complete a vision test, and write a multiple-choice knowledge test based on the official driver handbook.
Arrive with enough time
Knowledge tests are offered at DriveTest centres and do not require an appointment. DriveTest recommends arriving at least one hour before the centre closes so you have time to register and finish.
Check the location, hours, identification requirements, and current fee before leaving home. Centre capacity and local service details can affect your visit.
How the knowledge test works
DriveTest describes the knowledge test as multiple choice, not timed, and based on the official driver handbook. It says a typical knowledge test takes 20 to 30 minutes and has two or three sections.
DriveTest marks the test on the spot. You need a total score of at least 80% to pass, and its current guidance says results are available immediately.
If you need to try again
If you are unsuccessful, DriveTest says you can pay the fee and try again. Results are valid for one year, and a retry within that period requires only the sections that did not meet MTO standards.
Use the result to decide what to study next. A short diagnostic can help you identify whether signs, rules, or a specific topic needs attention before another attempt.
Small steps. Safer roads.
Study today for a more confident tomorrow.
