M1 process

Getting your M1 licence

How long is an M1 valid, and when can I book my road test?

An M1 is valid for 90 days from the day you get it. You must hold it for at least 60 of those days before you can attempt the Level One road test, so book that test as soon as you are eligible rather than waiting.

Can I carry a passenger on an M1?

No. M1 licence holders must not carry a passenger. This restriction applies specifically at the M1 level.

What happens after I pass the Level One road test?

You move to an M2 licence. Level Two lasts a minimum of 22 months, reducible by four months if you complete an approved motorcycle safety course, and you have a maximum of five years from passing the Level One road test to complete Level Two.

Does the zero-alcohol rule apply at every stage?

Yes. The zero blood-alcohol requirement applies at M1 and continues once you move to M2. It does not expire with the M1.

How is the motorcycle knowledge test structured?

The Official MTO Motorcycle Handbook must be used together with the Driver's Handbook. The Motorcycle Handbook covers motorcycle-specific knowledge the Driver's Handbook does not address at all, while the Driver's Handbook covers the rules-of-the-road and road-signs material also studied for the G1 test. DriveTest.ca does not currently publish a page we could verify for the exact question count, section breakdown, or fee, so we do not present those as confirmed facts. Check the current DriveTest knowledge-test page directly before your test.

Where can I review M1 restrictions?
