Cranking the wheel round for a sharp corner, some drivers spin it with an open palm. What technique does the Driver's Handbook actually prescribe for a sharp turn?

Correct answer: D. Hand over hand through the turn, feeding the wheel back afterwards — never with one finger or a flat palm

Use hand-over-hand steering: "turn the steering wheel with one hand and cross the other hand over it. Grip the wheel on the other side and continue turning." Coming out of the turn, "relax your grip on the steering wheel and let it slip or gently feed it through your hands to return to the straight-ahead position." What the Handbook rules out is steering "with one finger or the flat palm of your hand" — the palm-spin looks casual and works right up until the wheel snags or a front tyre finds a pothole, at which point you have no grip on it at all. Speed comes back gradually as you complete the turn, not before it.
