Correct answer: A. They are the same — $85 each
They are identical — $85.00 each. Schedule 43 lists "Fail to stop at railway crossing — bus" against Highway Traffic Act section 174(1) and "Fail to stop at railway crossing — school bus" against section 174(2), both at $85.00 outside a community safety zone. The demerit points tell a different story from the fines: failing to stop at an unprotected railway crossing is the only five-point offence in Ontario's demerit schedule, and it is listed for bus drivers only. That is the general pattern worth carrying away — a set fine is what you pay at the counter, and it is often a poor measure of how seriously the offence is treated, because the licence consequences run on a separate track.
