You have just turned onto what you hope is Highway 6. A short distance after the intersection you pass a small marker showing "6". What is that marker there to do?

Correct answer: C. Confirm you are now on the route you intended after making your turn

To confirm you got it right. Book 8 lists confirmation as one of the three jobs a route marker does — "to provide confirmation to the road user that they are on the correct route" — and specifies that markers "should also be placed on the departing legs of numbered roadways for confirmation purposes," so that a marker "is provided on the departing legs of numbered routes, allowing road users to confirm that they are on the correct route." This is why the useful moment to look for a route number is just *after* a turn, not only before one. If you have turned and no confirmation marker appears, that is a cue to check rather than to keep driving hopefully.
