Correct answer: A. Sidewalks and any paths or trails, as well as traffic in all directions

The sidewalks and any paths or trails. The instruction reads: "check traffic in all directions, including any sidewalks and paths/trails, before entering an intersection." Those are the places the traffic you are about to conflict with is quiet and fast — a cyclist on a multi-use trail crossing your path, or someone stepping off a sidewalk into the crosswalk you are turning across. Neither is in the stream of vehicles you naturally look at, and neither makes a noise you will hear. The list's companion item is the same idea for lane changes: "always check your blind spot: look in your mirror and over your shoulder before you change lanes."
